Harry Dresden is an exciting new protagonist in the contemporary fantasy scene.  Harry is a very likable, tall, handsome and honourable Wizard who advertises his services to the general population as a paranormal investigator. The book follows Harry as he solves a number of cases. One being a missing person’s case and another is helping the police solve a double murder involving magic.  During the book we meet numerous interesting players. Like Detective Karrin Murphy, a cute and spunky police detective in charge of Special Investigations (meaning supernatural.)  Bob who is an ancient air spirit that lives inside a human skull which resides in Harry’s basement lab.   Susan Rodriguez is a gorgeous newspaper reporter who is always looking for interesting stories involving the super natural. We also meet a number of bad guys including a demon, a gangster and a black magician.

The Storm Front is the first book in The Dresden Files. Jim Butcher has currently written 12 books in this series with book 13 due July 26, 2011.  He has also written 6 books in the Codex Alera Series, which is closer to High Fantasy than the Dresden Files.  See my review of these books at https://books-treasureortrash.com/?s=codex+alera. The Dresden Files are considered Contempory Fantasy and sometimes are referred to as Urban Fantasy.  They can also fall into the Detective genre since Harry solves a case in each book. Each book is told in the first person narrative from Harry Dresden’s point on view as we follow him through his life solving whatever case he is currently working on.

I enjoyed reading about the characters and Harry’s interactions with them. Harry has unusual, wizardry abilities and reading about the next trick he is going to use is fascinating. His unique way of dealing with the various challenges that he faces,  his extraordinary sense of humour and his own special way of looking at things keeps you turning pages.  He is kind of old fashioned and truly gallant.  His sense of honour in admirable. The book was fun to read but it was also quite exciting.  The book had a great ending and the story is stand alone with a proper conclusion.

This is a great first book and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book to you if you enjoy reading a good detective story encasing paranormal activities with a strong, honourable hero.
